Ever since the "Swedish nightingale" Jenny Lind captured the hearts of audiences in the period of Chopin and Mendelssohn, extraordinary Scandinavian singers have time and again taken the international stages by storm including legendary Wagner singers such as Kirsten Flagstad and Birgit Nilsson, lyrical tenor Nicolai Gedda or Jussi Björling, "the Swedish Caruso" who Mankell’s opera-loving detective Wallander named his dog after. Anne Sofie von Otter is, in the best possible sense of the word, a modern representative of her art. Critics rightly rave about "one of the most flexible and most natural vocal instruments" among great contemporary voices. Von Otter, Forsberg and Kuusisto create an evening of Scandinavian Lieder-art and chamber music with the piano for once being more than the accompanying instrument and a violin that truly sings enchantingly. Scandinavian teamwork!
