When he died far too early Franz Schubert left behind almost 1000 pieces, among them 600 lieder: sufficient for at least three musical lives. He owed the fact that he could be as productive as he was not least to his circle of friends, that looked after him. The friends brought him poems he would set to music, they were his first audience, and they made sure his genius – the man himself did not really bother with self-marketing – was publicly recognized. Many a masterpiece was first heard at casual, social gatherings: one of those legendary »Schubertiaden«, the delightfully mixed programs of which inspired the trio around Viennese tenor Daniel Johannsen.
