The »song of songs« is a love song: girlfriend and boyfriend offer spellbound praises to each other, and their loving glances enchant the entire world. That is why the Canticum Canticorum from the Old Testament still moves our hearts. The tension between sizzling eroticism and spiritual interpretation also invigorates the musical versions by Melchior Franck and Johann Hermann Schein. Basel-based vocal ensemble Voces Suaves combines their Song of Solomon motets with selected pieces from Schein’s »Israelsbrünnlein«: an homage celebrating the 400th anniversary of this masterpiece of German vocal music, that brings together the new madrigal style à la Monteverdi with polyphonic motet art. The couple in the Song of Solomon meets in a garden – in the Court of Columns at the Orangery Palace we add the summer to the concert.
