Die Geisterinsel

Shakespeare’s »Tempest« as Magic Opera

When Wilhelm Gotter adapted Shakespeare’s »Tempest« for the German stage he was looking for something along the lines of Mozart’s »Magic Flute«: he wanted Mozart as composer. Mozart’s spirit is very much alive in Johann Friedrich Reichardt’s score, first performed in Berlin in 1798. However, the Prussian royal court conductor also found his own, distinctive tone. A rewarding rediscovery of a musical rarity.

Prospero, formerly Duke of Milan, has been living with his daughter Miranda on an island for nine years. His magical powers served him well when he conquered the residents of the island, but he knows: those evil spirits from the past have not been banned and tonight his and his daughter’s fate will be decided! Yet as it happens a storm brings four shipwrecked people to the island and many unforeseen events take place… Reichardt’s magic fairy tale is sometimes lyrically tender, sometimes stormy and dramatic, with ethereal ghost choirs and comedic ensembles – atmospherically told by a top ensemble led by Hermann Max.
