What inspires composers? During the Baroque era reality sparked their fantasy: raging seas meant raging music. Romantics considered their work to be afflatus, a mystery. Freud’s discovery of the unconscious charged the creative act with inexplicable desire. Each generation has reinterpreted inspiration and revived its ancient embodiment, the Muses, differently.
