Muses - The art of inspiration

Symposium

program

Panel discussion with Hanna Schygulla (tbc), Vladimir Ivanoff, Kadir Amigo Memiş
& Hans-Joachim Giegel.

Moderation: Dorothee Oberlinger

What inspires composers? During the Baroque era reality sparked their fantasy: raging seas meant raging music. Romantics considered their work to be afflatus, a mystery. Freud’s discovery of the unconscious charged the creative act with inexplicable desire. Each generation has reinterpreted inspiration and revived its ancient embodiment, the Muses, differently. Dorothee Oberlinger and guests talk about experiences with the eternal topic, about Stravinsky’s »Apollon Musagète« and the 1920s, the crucible of modernity. And sociologist and musicologist Hans-Joachim Giegel puts the quest for the essence of inspiration in a culture-historical context.
