He moved from Guadeloupe to Paris, was a champion fencer, swam like a fish and knew Mozart and Leclair in person. The son of a plantation owner and a slave made a splash not only as chief orchestral conductor and composer but also as socialite and womanizer. He joined a people of colour regiment and fought for the revolution and he was there when the revolutionary spark ignited the colonies. Joseph Bologne’s life tops any novel. Listen and find out how his music compares to some of his more famous contemporaries: in the charming setting that is the Church of Our Saviour Sacrow, which was built onto a headland into the River Havel.
