Even when based in Rheinsberg Palace before the prince’s coronation, Johann Gottlieb Janitsch, one of Friedrich II’s very first court musicians, would regularly put on concerts for an audience from the city. Later in Berlin he continued the tradition of these »Friday Academies«, which meant non-noble music lovers could enjoy the most recent compositions by the pros and sometimes talented amateurs would partake the performances. These friendship-based musical gatherings led to a new concert culture beyond the courts. A hand-picked chamber ensemble from Akademie für Alte Musik, a top international orchestra for historically informed performances, presents musical rarities by Janitsch and colleagues.
