The Island of the Amazons

Baroque Opera with Power Women

Whether or not women could do everything at least as well as men if given the opportunity was already being discussed in the 17th century. Amazons took the stage by storm – in Carlo Pallavicino’s opera »Le Amazzoni nell’isole fortunate« quite literally as a huge army. Its commissioner had an open-air theatre purpose-built for the world premiere. Almost 350 years later Pallavicino’s amazons celebrate their comeback in the Palace Theatre.

Christophe Rousset, musical director

Beautiful, smart and bellicose Pulcheria, queen of the amazons, runs a tight ship on her island state. Until that is, a man is shipwrecked on her shore and manages to thoroughly confuse her. Just now as her people are mobilizing against a mighty enemy! Pallavicino’s mercurial score is in no way inferior to the joyfully crazy storytelling of the libretto: hardly ever has the story of Amor’s power weakening both strong women and tough men been told so gorgeously. Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques act as guarantors for musical delectation and internationally renowned stage director Nicola Raab applies modern means to reviving baroque pictorial worlds.
