500 years ago, Basque Juan Sebastian Elkano departed with Magellan’s expedition for the fabled Spice Islands – and became the first person to sail around the world. History may have forgotten him, but Basque baroque ensemble Euskal are building a resounding monument to their compatriot. The rich musical tradition of his home, music from the Bay of Biscay as well as the French regions of the Atlantic, Arabian chants from Al-Andalus and traditional sounds from Malayic Polynesia all come together invoking the global interconnectedness of cultures.
A co-production of Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci and the Spanish National Centre for the Diffusion of Music (CNDM. Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical). Management & Production: MG Music Management.
This concert was supported by a grant from Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).
