When the Spanish and Portuguese conquered the Americas, they brought their ornate polyphonic music with them to the New Worlds. But once there, the composers encountered an exciting<s>ly </s>different musical tradition that also gave fresh impetus to the Christian message of faith with rhythmic energy and dance-like verve. On an intercontinental cruise, Leonardo García Alarcón and his ensemble discovered sacred music on the move - between devotion and ecstasy, visionary spirituality and full human life. When they celebrate the birth of Christ with an exuberant Fiesta Criolla or cheer him on to battle evil like a matador in the arena, heaven and earth meet in the force field of music that is as enthusiastic as it is inspiring.
