Shakespeare‘s tragedy of black Othello who is sent from Venice to Cyprus to fight the Ottomans and the story’s genius film version by Orson Welles inspired this extravagant project. Venetian motets, byzantine singings and Guillaume Dufay’s expressive polyphony meet the refined French musical culture of the Cypriot royal court, which has survived in a unique codex. A musical cabinet of wonders opens and Wells‘ cinematic vision brings the events to magically shining light.
