Jordi Savall
conception, compilation of the music pieces & musical direction

Europe’s cultural golden age was paid for by abducting and enslaving millions of people. The transatlantic slave trade is a crime against humanity the consequences of which linger to this day. Musicians from four continents explore the traces of history in the collective memory of music that gives a voice to the suffering, defies desperation and celebrates the joy of life against all odds.

Early Music legend and UNESCO »Artist for Peace« Jordi Savall and his top international musicians tell a disturbing tale of cultures being both deadly entrapped and vividly intertwined. Memories of human beings deprived of their humanity survive in the improvisatory singings by the »griots«, poet singers from Western Africa, in slave songs and North American spirituals and in the traditional Latin American music as well as in pieces by Spanish and Portuguese composers who were inspired by the foreign sounds. Moving texts from the age of the conquistadores to Martin Luther King highlight the historical background and demand our attention: this story is nowhere near over. United Nations in a concert demanding a more humane world.
