Folkert Uhde conception & texts
In 1674 Adam Reincken had to hire a painter for a selfie with friends. The result is nowadays on display in a museum and presents a riddle to posteriority. Is the person next to Dietrich Buxtehude really Johann Theile and who is who? Who is the lady with the lute? Is the gentleman with the plume hat a self-portrayal of the painter? Always bearing Johann Voorhout’s music making scene in mind, a quartet of virtuosos plus soprano Joowon Chung and Folkert Uhde as narrator conjure up an impression of an era when immortal art was created in the midst of intoxicating sensual pleasures and devastating catastrophes.
