Of course there is a happy end in Telemann’s vernally fresh pastoral, that sees numerous emotional turbulences end with a double wedding. And under the guise of the shepherds’ costumes we meet young people in emotional turmoil between longing for freedom and joyful commitment who as it turns out are not strangers at all. The storytelling with much musical esprit, rousing energy and enticing melodies is pure delight: Italian arias, French airs, comedic scenes and grand choral tableaus – Telemann simply pulls out all the stops of his stupendous stylistic diversity. Outstanding singers, Dorothee Oberlinger’s virtuosic ensemble 1700 and a production team that knows how to put its knowledge of historically informed practices in music and theatre onto the stage – a sparkling reopening premiere for the Palace Theatre in the New Palace!
