A cult film & its soundtrack

program

Me and the Sun King: Gérard Corbiau's opulent film spectacle about the (un)stoppable rise of Jean-Baptiste Lully at the court of Louis XIV.

In the pre-talk about the soundtrack:
Reinhard Goebel
Dorothee Oberlinger

Paris 1687: Jean-Baptiste Lully, who ruled French music as absolutely as Louis XIV ruled his state, has rammed his baton through his foot during a rehearsal and is feverishly awaiting death from gangrene. On his deathbed, he remembers how it all began and how the young Louis rose to become the Sun King by dancing: in the splendor of his music! Gérard Corbiau's captivating, visually stunning film owes its impact not least to the phenomenal soundtrack, performed by Musica Antiqua Köln under Reinhard Goebel. In conversation with Dorothee Oberlinger, the pioneering baroque violinist, musicologist and conductor gets you in the mood for Lully's musical world with irresistible enthusiasm.
