Frederick the Great did not do things by halves. When he hired a new ballet company for his opera house in 1744, he captured the most sought-after dancing star of the day: Barbara Campanini. Soon, all of Berlin was crazy about her legs. »La Barberina« probably made her most famous appearance in Carl Heinrich Graun's opera »Adriano in Siria«, in 1746. It will see its first modern revival at the Schlosstheater in 2024.

The private is political and the political is private, in this opera about the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who invades Syria as a conqueror. He has taken Emirena, the daughter of the defeated king, hostage - and fallen in love with her. But Emirena already has a bridegroom. The young couple fight desperately for their love: oppressed by Hadrian, the new ruler, who wants to separate them, and by the old king, who wants to make her the instrument of his plans for revenge. - With all their skill and experience, Dorothee Oberlinger, her Ensemble 1700 and a squad of virtuoso vocal soloists rise to the challenge of reviving Graun's masterpiece in all its musical finesse. And thanks to Deda Cristina Colonna's staging, which also looks at Syria from today's perspective, the famous Barberina dances in a modern guise.
