Itaipu means "the singing rock" in the language of the Guarani: a legendary piece of rock in the rapids of the River Paraná exuding a unique sound. For the indigenous people it is "the place where music is born". It took 17 years to build a massive dam in the river at the border of Brazil and Paraguay resulting in one of the world's largest hydroelectric plants. The project inspired Philip Glass to write a monumental choral-symphonic piece: maximal music, which invokes the power of the water and the technology that tames it by means of energy driven rhythms and it challenges any choir to deliver outstanding performances.

The sound of water will already be roaring around you at the Pre-Concert in the foyer at 07.30 pm: when presenting the world premier of choir performance "Aqua Qua" conducted by composer David Moss, the Choir of Helmholtz-Gymnasium and the Generationenchor Potsdam will put you in the mood fort he adventure that is "Itaipu".
