After a restless life as a traveller and twenty years as court conductor in Berlin, Johann Friedrich Reichardt turned his back to the noise of the world and withdrew to his country estate near Halle. There he created probably one of his most beautiful compositions: a garden idyll between mountain and valley seemingly born from the imagination of a romantic poet. And all the poets came to visit: Jean Paul, Eichendorff, Brentano and even Goethe when he was setting up a novel summer theatre in nearby Bad Lauchstädt. Reichardt's guest list included the cream of artists and scientists. They would listen to his songs being performed in the airy garden hall with its doors opening wide to the park.
