String quintet G. 362 in G-minor, op. 46 Nr. 4
Concert for violoncello and strings G. 480 in G-major

Stabat Mater G. 532 for soprano and string quintet
(First version from 1781)

The string quintet is Luigi Boccherini's very own invention: he joined the existing quartet at the court of his master, the Infante Don Luis as virtuosic cellist and fully used the potential of this formation in over 100 pieces. The one that is being introduced here belongs to a group he dedicated to his Royal Prussian fan Frederic William II. Soloist Roel Dieltiens even thinks the cello concert in G-major unfolds more effectively when accompanied by a string quartet plus violone instead of an orchestra. And the quintet cast also lends highest concentradion and intensity to the heartfelt layment of Mary in the »Stabat Mater«, which Don Luis had requested from Boccherini for moments of intimate devotion. This masterpiece of subtle expressiveness brings the homage we pay to Boccherini to a touching finale.
