Supermen and dream women, heroism and adventure, exotic locations, spectacular magic, and love to the point of madness: this is the stuff that makes bestsellers - and great opera. Lodovico Ariosto's fantasy epic about the love-crazed knight Roland was still a favorite book of the time when Agostino Steffani brought his version to the stage in Hanover in 1691. The magic of his music is unbroken!
As a leader who is sure of victory, Orlando always hasthe situation under control. Until his love for Angelicadrives him crazy. Angelica, in turn, becomes a strangerin her own country through her forbidden love for Medoro. And Bradamante, who wants to free her Ruggiero from the power of the manipulative Atlante, soon has to fear for his loyalty. For all of them, lovebecomes a journey into the unknown, on which theirpaths become hopelessly entangled...
Among the composers of his time, Agostino Steffani isunique in many respects. His sound language andmusical narrative style are very individual andchallenge the ensemble around Dorothee Oberlinger in a different way than the vocal artistry of the later Baroque period. One can look forward to the production by the German-British director and choreographer Jean Renshaw, who discovers thetimelessly current potential in the Baroque series of relationships.
