Both George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach continued to lose their vision as they got older, and sought help from the most famous cataract doctor at the time. John Taylor was a genius at marketing, but not so much in the medical field: Handel went blind and Bach passed away after what seemed like recuperation, likely as a result of the surgery. His opus ultimum was left unfinished, and posterity was left with several unanswered questions. Indeed, posterity continues to respond, producing one new performance version after another. The Collegium Musicum ‘23, having found a most inspiring rehearsal space (the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig), presents Bach’s fugue skills in a touchingly transparent way, set for string quartet.
