Chandeliers as Display of Power and Magnificence

King Frederick II invested large sums out of his own pocket in crystal, glass and porcelain chandeliers from famous manufactories across Europe. Yet more important than the actual light was the aesthetic effect the chandeliers produced in the rooms. They were far more than mere illumination – instead they symbolised power, affluence, and the high social status that Frederick wished to bestow upon his castles and his court.
