After the Explorer of European music Dr. Burney had initially satisfied his boundless curiosity in France and Italy, he set out to explore other parts of Europe in 1772: a very arduous undertaking in the age of the stagecoach. And he could not even dream of a recording device; music was only available live or in sheet music for the initiated. The Apollo's Cabinet ensemble, which delighted audiences at the 2024 lunch concerts with a musical birthday celebration for Frederick II, illustrates the diary of the well-traveled man with live music from many countries, from grand masters such as Vivaldi and Bach to charming rarities. Dr. Burney would be amused indeed!
