For Joseph Haydn, the monumental performances of Handel’s oratorios were among the most unforgettable impressions during his travels to England. That, and his visit to Wilhelm Herschel’s observatory with its state-of-the-art telescopes. Enlightened by knowledge, mankind rediscovers the miracle of creation and becomes aware of the human responsibility it entails: The Age of Enlightenment brought with it a greatly optimistic perspective on the world and mankind, and there is no piece of music that encompasses this in a more stirring way than Haydn’s oratorio, highlighting the utopic magic of the beginning as opposed to the power of revolutionary change.
