Spiritual Life in Potsdam
Nadja Allerheiligen
Algarotti, Frederick II, and European Enlightenment
Born in Venice, Francesco Algarotti was elevated to the rank of count by Frederick II and, being an author and art connoisseur, he was an illustrious guest at the king’s famous round table for many years. Alongside distinguished personages such as Voltaire, de la Mettrie and the Marquis d'Argens, he played a significant role in shaping Potsdam’s intellectual scene. But what brought the son of a Venetian merchant to Potsdam, and what was his influence on the king and the Enlightenment in Prussia?
