description

1740 in Paris: the viola da gamba has seen better days. She used to be a favourite at the Sun King's court but now the violin is outstripping her and even the parvenu violoncello has become competition. Not even at the court of Versailles one is safe from this flood of Italian sonatas and concerti. Enter the music-loving lawyer Hubert Le Blanc with a passionate plea for the bass viol and a determination to put the French style back into its rightful place. Le Blanc's eccentricity and his intricate arguments make the book both interesting and entertaining. Who is going to be the winner? Definitely the audience - as the clash of cultures is performed by Ricercar Consort's phenomenal soloists.
