Songs of love, jest, ridicule, fight and lamentation based on poems by
Christine de Pizan (1364-1430)
When VocaMe presented the singings of the Byzantine woman Kassia at the Music Festival in 2014 everyone was enthralled. Their new project focuses on another strong woman. Christine de Pizan is considered the most important female writer of her age. Her texts about history, politics, education and even knighthood and the art of warfare were widely read. Apparently her poetry was sung as well. There is a musical rendering of one of her poems by her contemporary Gilles Binchois to prove it. This inspired the VocaMe singers to create new songs by blending some of Christine's many ballads and chansons with melodies from her period: a method, which was quite common during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Given their fantasy and vocal mastery it's an adventure they pass with flying colours.
