[Extra listening] 19.00 h: Dr. Jelle Dietrickx introduces the musical world of Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi
In 1843 Hans Christian Andersen wrote in a letter to a German friend: "My friend the composer Gade went to Leipzig and composes with Mendelssohn who loves him dearly." As for many Scandinavian composers, Leipzig became a starting point for the Dane from where he began a successful career. The young talent from the North inspired Mendelssohn and his concert audience so Gade was hired for the newly founded academy of music and Mendelssohn also made him 2nd conductor at the prestigious Gewandhaus. Yet in 1847 Gade had to attend the funeral of his friend and patron. The Stockholm-based DAHLKVIST QUARTET contrasts Mendelssohn’s quartet in F minor with a late piece by Gade adds the latest piece by the Swedish composer Andrea Tarrodi, which is inspired by Swedish and Hungarian folk music, as an exciting contemporary counterpoint.
